When I was a kid, my dad hated when I hung up anything on my walls. My art, band posters, movie posters, anything. Not with taxks, not with tape (it “ripped the paint off”) not with anything. At one point in 5th or 6th grade he came in my room and found me hanging up a Diary of a Wimpy Kid poster with tacos and he was like “EVERY HOLE YOU PUT IN THE WALL TAKES $10 OFF THE VALUE OF THE HOUSE.” so when I was mad at him, I’d insert tacks into the wall in places he couldn’t easily see just out of spite. Whoever owns the house now is probably wondering about it.

bro didn’t even know you could just fill holes with toothpaste 💀

I know this is about an owned house (that you should be touching up and repainting the walls of before reselling anyway???) but for ppl who are paranoid about putting holes in rental walls: don’t be.
Put up posters. Shelving if you need it. Have hanging plants. Invest in a studfinder. Spackle kits are cheap and everywhere now, or you can use white toothpaste, glue, or even soft air-dry clay to fill holes.
Scuffs and rub marks are considered normal wear and tear and landlords can’t charge you for them. Most places will have you fill holes but will have to repaint between tenants anyway, so even if the spackle doesn’t match the walls, it’s not a big deal. Check your state laws about what is considered normal wear and tear. Most states have laws covering everything from paint to flooring. For instance, in my state, carpet that is 3+ years old is considered past its normal life cycle and therefore any damage to it cannot be charged for because the landlord/management is expected to put in new carpeting.

Before any move-out, check local laws considering paint, flooring, light fixtures, appliances, etc. Landlords and management companies make BANK on people not knowing that they’re paying for paint rubs that they’re painting over anyway and carpet that has been paid for 6 times over.

Reminder: they’re never ever ever ever going to give you your security deposit back no matter what you do. have fun with life.

Actually, if your landlord isn’t giving your security deposit back without good reason (in new york, they gave to give you a itemized receipt listing why they deducted from it) bring them to small claims court. Don’t let the bloodsuckers get away with your money.

Our last landlord tried keeping all the deposit and charging is for more. When we moved in, I took a whole lotta pictures. I took pics when we moved out and did my research regarding local laws and looked at how frequently tenants win in small claims court here. Over 80% of cases are in favor of tenants.

So I wrote a very professional letter to the landlord and property management company. I provided this information and sent a CD with copies of before and after pics of the place with notes, like the place hadn’t been cleaned before we moved in, there was a hole from the second bathroom to the outside, large enough to fit a fat raccoon, husky fur everywhere, nails, hooks, and tacks in the walls, footprints on the ceiling, human hair on the walls and ceilings of the main bathroom.

I informed them they had 60 days to return our deposit or we will take them to small claims court. Local laws state that if a tenant wins, we receive 3x the deposit, and the landlord pays all court costs and fees. 58 days after sending the letter, we received our deposit with an apology for “confusion.”

These people are dependent on ignorance. Be aware, be knowledgeable, and make them afraid.

^^^^

i have lived in over 20 buildings and have gotten my entire deposit back on all but three of them.

Leave zero things behind. Like ZERO, do not leave curtains if they aren’t the curtains that were there already, do not leave items that are trash, do not leave that glass top end table you don’t want anymore, NOTHING.

Spend the $50 on a “Rug Doctor” rug cleaning machine rental from like a Safeway or someplace. Works like a vacuum cleaner that you put soapy water in, you can usually rent one for 48 hours at a major grocery store, look online for where. Clean out the empty fridge and the cupboards with a sponge.

but the main thing is what the person above me said about knowing the rental law, so find a couple reasons while you live there to let them know you know some rental laws

(by which i also mean, look up your local rental laws – most existing laws work to protect renters over landlords. Shady landlords absolutely count on people not knowing these laws)

There are plenty of law abiding landlords around (big rental companies will demand the law be followed just to avoid a settlement or law suit, and some landlords are literally just normal people doing their best because owning a home on minimum wage used to be a thing and keeping your starter home and renting it out when you bought your larger family home used to also be a thing and was considered part of a smart retirement plan) So often, doing a legit job cleaning out the place (enough for them to send a crew in to paint everything right away) is enough to secure your deposit.

but there are for sure a whole lot of shitty predatory landlords out there, so learn at least some of your local rental laws.

For example, a shady landlord might say, “oh i have to use the deposit to replace the carpet because of all the wear and tear on it while you lived here” but in my state, a landlord cannot keep the deposit to cover the cost of replacing the carpet unless the tenant has caused significant damage beyond normal usage, because the landlord is responsible for replacing the carpets and they are supposed to do so a minimum of once every ten years, paid for by the property owner as part of normal maintenance.

What i’m getting at is, if you have previously quoted a rental law or two, even a shady landlord probably won’t try that kind of thing. They are mostly bluff and bluster artists, who bully people they hope don’t know the law. If they still try to out-bluff you, your state probably has an office dedicated to receiving complaints from renters about shady landlords.

Plus you can always look up things like, EVEN IF THEY ARE IN THE RIGHT to evict you, in my state when they serve you with a “3 day notice to quit residence” the tenant has something like 7 business days to respond, and if they respond with a disagreement there’s like a 30 day process that can be turned into a 60 day process and then like, appealed etc and then even when the courts say you are Legally Evicted As Of This Moment you can file a request for 40 more days to move, and all in all it can take six months or more to make the courts and therefor the police force a tenant out if they insist on staying, even while the tenant refuses to pay rent the whole time, AND the process costs the landlord hundreds of dollars in legal fees to move the process forward at each stage, all of which is one of a landlord’s worst nightmares.

So look up some renters laws and let the fact that you know the law slip into the conversation in a nonchalant way during your time there, it’s a great precaution against any possible shady landlords

I sat with a crying second grader today. (The age range is outside my wheelhouse but I was the most convenient adult.) He was crying, the other adults said, because his brother took a phone he was playing on. “Phone addicted,” everybody said. “If he would get up and play games with the other kids he wouldn’t be crying.”

He told me everyone lets his brother take things from him because his brother is younger, and doesn’t know better. He told me he doesn’t want to play because he’s tired, he has too many extracurriculars this summer and can’t get good sleep because “everyone in my camper is so loud when I’m trying to sleep.” He’s exhausted and only eight. His mom’s an acquaintance and told me she and the kid’s father are going through a separation — mom and four kids left the house to stay in a camper.

But people will seriously not listen to kids crying over seemingly minor things because on the surface it looks like a tantrum. If kids are given the space to articulate themselves they often will.

I’ve found that if a child is capable of having a conversation (that is, old enough to speak and express themselves, not injured or upset so badly that they literally cannot stop crying, and not behaving violently), then 90% of the time their reason for being upset is legitimate, or at least understandable.

Please remember that this also applies to teenagers and preteens, they might be acting like a knowitall who doesn’t give a shit, or a first class jerk, but chances are fair they feel like shit for one reason or another and adults just chalk it up to teenage angst instead

Almost every time you see someone, child, teen, or adult, who is having some emotional meltdown over something minor, it’s a “straw that broke the camels back” situation.

Kids and teens may have bigger reactions or it may take less to overwhelm them, but it’s important to remember that they are still people and it’s hard being a people.

People don’t like to admit it bcs cringe or w/e but Homestuck really did revolutionize the webcomic as a storytelling medium and I am endlessly frustrated that before webcomic artists could really stretch our legs fucking webtoonz swooped in, set a new, more restrictive standard, and then monetized and monopolized the ever living fuck out of the concept of The Webcomic until it drove away anyone who couldn’t be a professional quality manga artist for free, and now the only webcomics that actually feel like spiritual successors to Homestuck are so obscure they’re basically cult classics that you have to beg people to read.

Like it’s just so wild to be in high school and see Homestuck be like “we’re using like fifteen different artistic mediums to tell this story bcs we can” and be really fucking inspired by that, only to grow up and see basically every webcomic ever have to conform to One Single Standard or fucking perish.

Actually, I realized my real point here: we all need to make our art weirder. Please make weird art. I want more stuff like Prequel Adventure and 17776 and MyHouse.wad and I want it now. Capitalism thrives on conformity. We must be weird at all costs.

“It is worth remembering that the internet wasn’t supposed to be like this. It wasn’t supposed to be six boring men with too much money creating spaces that no one likes but everyone is forced to use because those men have driven every other form of online existence into the ground. The internet was supposed to have pockets, to have enchanting forests you could stumble into and dark ravines you knew better than to enter. The internet was supposed to be a place of opportunity, not just for profit but for surprise and connection and delight. Instead, like most everything American enterprise has promised held some new dream, it has turned out to be the same old thing—a dream for a few, and something much more confining for everyone else.”

if you are dealing with extreme heat or even just. moderate heat in your area right now. 80f/26c is when it starts getting toasty for a lot of people. if you are in a heat wave and you have not done yourself the favor of googling fucking “heat exhaustion symptoms” i am shaking you violently right now. look it up. burn the symptoms into your brain. heatstroke is no joke and it can and WILL sneak up on you before you’re aware it’s even an issue. ohh my god

if you are outside and it is hot and sunny and you are sweating thru your clothes or feeling tired or starting to get irrationally agitated or upset in another way or feeling nauseous or your heart is pounding etc etc if you are feeling Weird and Bad for no apparent reason while you are in a warm/hot area then i have news for you! you need to cool down! right now! oh my god.

and there’s a very good chance that you’re gonna think “it’s not heat exhaustion, i don’t feel any warmer than i have all day” when you consider it as a reason why you are suddenly feeling weirdbad for no apparent reason during a record-breaking heatwave and i would like to say. there is no harm in sitting in the shade and drinking some water even if heat exhaustion isn’t the cause of whatever ailment is inflicting itself upon u. once i swore up and down to my bf that i was just kinda tired and headachy and got bitchy about the possibility of being overheated and needing to drink water. because heat exhaustion tends to make you bitchy. but i did as he asked and drank some cold water and my condition immediately improved. because it was heat exhaustion and heat exhaustion is evil and a liar. sit down. drink water

  • you will not feel any warmer because you are not warmer
  • it’s not about being warmer it’s about time spent being a little too warm
  • also hydration (always drink so much more water than you think you need to be drinking, you are losing more when it’s warm)
  • do not cool down too fast or hydrate too fast. get somewhere cool (not freezing) and sip water (not chug). but like a lot of it, and for at least 15 minutes.
  • if you start feeling headachey or nauseous, it is becoming urgent. seek medical assistance ASAP.
  • if confusion sets in (you will most likely notice this in other people rather than yourself) it is becoming very urgent.
  • seek medical assistance ASAP if you or anyone else becomes incapacitated suddenly, sits down suddenly, becomes confused or is making very little sense, while it is warm out.
  • this includes strangers: check in with people who are sitting down in strange places- like “resting” in direct sunlight- and especially if they cannot tell you clearly and with sound reason why they are sitting down there, or even why they feel unwell.
  • this includes mildly warm weather, and any sunny weather. remember: it’s not just temperature, it’s a lot of other factors (hydration, personal tolerance, time spent in the sun or heat, etc.)
  • anyone with an up-to-date (within the last 2 years) first aid certification should be trained in how to help with heat exhaustion and heat stroke. if you’re in a public place, you can often just shout for help. or you can contact someone you know with an up-to-date cert; anyone working in childcare will almost definitely have one. (this is true in the US, I cannot verify for other countries)

Signed: I’m not a medical professional, this is from various first aid certs and a bit of online research to double check my memory.

Working Pride in 95° weather today I drank at minimum 120 oz of water, probably 160 - i can’t remember if i filled my 40 oz bottle 3x or 4 - and when I got home, not to be gross but my pee was still dangerously dark. Since I got home I’ve had another 30 oz or so of water and a protein drink.

I still feel dried out.

You need SO MUCH MORE WATER THAN YOU THINK when it’s hot out. So much more. Constantly sipping cold water is your friend. The general guideline i learned was “no more than 8 oz every 15m, no less than 8 oz every half hour” in the heat. You want to be constantly taking in cold water, not chugging it every so often.

and remember that if you dont like water, anything that is not alcohol or seawater will hydrate you. water is best, obviously, but its useless if you dont drink it bc you dont like it, so soda can be second best, if it gets fluids in you.

why do you and others like vaccines so much?

not dying of preventable diseases is actually one of my favorite hobbies

Because smallpox used to kill about 30% of everyone who caught it. The successful vaccine program run by the world’s medical community means that no one will ever die of smallpox ever again.

Because rabies is 100% fatal without a vaccine. No one needs to die of rabies ever again. It is entirely preventable.

Because 1-2 in 1000 who get measles, die. Vaccines let us contain outbreaks or fully wipe them out. There is no specific treatment for the disease once you have it. Your immune system either wins or you die.

We like vaccines because vaccines save lives and raise our standard of living.

My mother, now in her 70s, talks about how her mother wept for joy when her children received the polio vaccine. Because she didn’t have to be afraid of polio anymore.

A 2019 study found that measles can cause “immune amnesia”, cutting your antibodies by 10%, up to almost 75%.  Meaning, you’ve become that much more vulnerable to a whole slew of illnesses that you used to be protected from, and it doesn’t matter if you acquired the antibodies via a vaccine or recovering from an illnesses - they are gone.  All those shots you got as a baby?  The boosters you got through grade school and as an adult, including the annual flu shot?  Guess what: measles most likely wiped your body’s immune memory of those and you’ll have to get them all.  Over.  Again.

If you keep assuming that everyone with an identity you don’t understand or relate to is a dangerous enemy, then you have more in common with transphobes than you think you do.

You have a fear response, and instead of interrogating it, you try to justify it by framing it as a legitimate threat. You start trying to convince others you’re right because you’re insecure and can’t tolerate something you don’t understand.

You act like these “weird queers” care about nothing more than trying to have sex with you when no one actually gives a shit about you, they’re just trying to describe their experiences.

And make no mistake: this is a bubble. This is the inevitable climax of a stockholder-driven hunger for infinite growth, despite the fact that, by design, such a thing cannot and should not exist. The infection of Wall Street has overwhelmed the entertainment industry beyond repair, leading to cultural vandals like David Zaslav to be appointed with the callous duty of strip-mining decades’ of artistic beauty for pennies of tax write-offs. companies really have got to be okay with stagnant profits. what is wrong with earning the same amount every year? why does it always have to be more? it’s not sustainable. there are only so many people on the planet you can profit from 😭

This is the thing. If there are only so many people they can profit from, and they demand to see profits go up every year, they will have to steal more out of the pockets of the little people each year, either by paying less, or by charging more. And that is the problem. Because that is exactly what is happening. And the rich get richer. And the poor are getting so poor that it is coming to a crisis point. They seem to have forgotten what happens at the crisis point though: people who have nothing to lose, will rise up and fight.

If you are technically capable of going out or doing something during a chronic illness flare-up, that doesn’t mean it isn’t debilitating. You shouldn’t have to push yourself through pain, and it’s okay to say “I could but I shouldn’t. I could but I don’t want to.”

since we are talking about people who deserve a higher salary i think teachers should be making six figures a year btw. if state superintendents who have never set foot in a classroom can make that much so should the teachers. teachers are quite literally the backbone of our society and if teachers were actually properly compensated we wouldn’t have a shortage or bad teachers who are continually burnout because of a lack of proper compensation.
