I don’t think every sword and sorcery fantasy RPG needs D&D-style mimics, but I do think there’s value in having something that’s incongruously carnivorous, just to keep players on their toes. Pack-hunting rabbits that swarm their prey. Ambush predator sheep. Yes, monsters you can have stupid arguments with are a cornerstone of the genre, but sometimes you’ve just got to hit ‘em with some seemingly innocuous critter which uncomplicatedly wants to eat faces.

I’m fond of pack hunting not-squirrels. Something about making the threat arboreal really freaks people out.

Please. Help.

The girl I’m dating and I both think that we sleep on the left side of the bed. I’m coming to terms with the fact that she may be a psychopath and I don’t know what’s real anymore.

image

Which option has the sides of the bed correctly labelled?

#1

#2

Neither #1 nor #2 but a secret third thing

“left” and “right” are both relative terms determined relative to a person. The correct answers are port and starboard.

Yeah this one seems pretty straightforward. I’m sure there’s some exceptions, but every depiction I can think of, including IRL race car beds, agrees.

i spent too long on this and regret nothing

Nor should you, this is glorious

Going to start describing everything I have not yet published as “underappreciated” on the grounds that there’s almost certainly at least one person out there who would appreciate it they knew about it.

Strictly speaking, describing an unpublished work as “pretty obscure – you’ve probably never heard of it” will almost always be correct.

“afab chests aren’t inherently sexu—” please say breasts please just say breasts please please please stop throwing the term “afab” around say tatas say titties say big bahoona bazingoroos if you must

not to be that guy but if you’re talking about breasts, say breasts. if you’re talking about pregnancy, say pregnancy. you don’t have to bend over backwards coming up with wacky shit like “uterus-having pregnancy-carrier” or “afab presenting nipples” to be more inclusive. half the time, it’s not inclusive anyway. so just be specific. a person with breasts can simply be “a person with breasts.” it’s easy, it’s fun, it’s free

#some trans men don’t have breasts. famously‚ there’s a surgery about it #some cis women don’t have breasts. the same surgery #some trans women do have breasts. famously #there are hormones and also surgery about it #some cis men have breasts. Gandalf for one (via @aurpiment)

I think often about the fact that both John Adams and Thomas Jefferson died on the same night, exactly 50 years after July 4th, 1776. That seems like one of those things that would be made up as a part of American civic religion, but it’s completely true. They signed the Declaration of Independence, lived for exactly another half century, and then died the same day. Adams’ last words were “Thomas Jefferson survives,” not knowing he had died several hours earlier

Seriously though, painkillers take time to hit. Don’t wait until the pain makes you miserable, take them as soon as you realize your day is gonna suck without them

WHEN YOU TAKE IT SOONER, YOU CAN TAKE LESS. TAKE IT FROM A FORMER PHARMACY TECH.

okay I’ve finally formulated this feeling into words,

the thing about the “do it scared” mantra is that depending on your specific brand of brainweird, you may have to first,,, learn to be,,, scared. and also the difference between general anxiety and legitimate alarms.

like, I tried to do everything scared for basically all my life and it mainly led to a series of breakdowns because I was so allergic to my own emotions, fear being one of them, that I had almost no connection to my wants/needs/gut instincts, and therefore simply couldn’t cope with Situations.

anyway I’m not saying it’s a bad policy, I think it is really good in fact, but if you are trying it and finding things keep imploding for no reason, could be worth checking whether you are even letting yourself be scared in the first place.

Yep! As a therapist, ‘do it scared’ is helpful for people with anxiety disorders- provided they are able to process their distress! The ‘do it scared’ approach’s goal is to help people understand that their fear doesn’t control them and that actually being afraid isn’t a bad and doesn’t prevent them from doing things they want to do. Which means that if you’re not able to recognize and process your fear, the exposure doesn’t work.

Modifications to this approach involve mindfulness (specifically learning what fear feels like, how distressing it is, what triggers it, why the fear happens) as well as learning your zone of tolerance, because if you’re pushing yourself into the point of sheer mindless terror, that’s not helpful. Also, anxiety stemming mainly from trauma can benefit from the ‘do it scared’ approach sometimes, but it tends to need trauma work along with it.

also begging lots of people to actually interact with children of all ages and talk to them like real people and pay attention to what they’re saying and let them gush and vent to you and treat them like the human beings they are. and observe how many of their issues come from being locked in hellish systems in which their autonomy is nul, they’re dropped into the crab bucket that is school, and they often have no recourse or choice in trying to reclaim their agency or escape abusive circumstances bc even the best parents will encounter no resistance from their community were they to decide to cut their kids’ access to food, security, medical assistance or privacy. many will even defend invade their kids’ privacy. it’s wild how so many people recognize they were traumatized by their childhoods and will then condescendingly eclare that children are incapable of rational thoughts or decisions and that depriving them of freedom of movement or contact with the outside world is an ideal solution to any conflict between them and their kids. and how many won’t even like. take five minutes to listen to an eight year who’s excited about pyramids and is ecstatic at the fact that SOMEONE listens to them and asks questions and doesn’t dismiss their interest. or affirm a 14 year old when they talk about their distress and real suffering rather than going “you’ll get it when you’re older”. or consider that a 12 year old might actually have something valuable to say about life or have knowledge/understanding an adult does not.
